Principal Update
Dear Families
Firstly, I would like to share some news relating to the future leadership of the school. I am pleased to announce that Brad Trpchev has been appointed Principal for next year, and will commence this role at the beginning of 2021. This a wonderful opportunity for the Balga PS community to have a highly recommended Principal who has been identified and appointed on behalf of the Director General. Brad has led a number of schools in remote communities over the years and brings a wealth of knowledge and experience. Currently, he is leading Nollamara PS, and will remain there until the end of this this year. A representative from the school board was consulted during this process, and the decision was endorsed. I am also pleased to announce that I will remain at Balga PS until the end of this year, which will allow for a comprehensive and effective transition leading into 2021. I look forward to continuing to lead the school for the duration of the year, and I thank you for your support.
Learning to Read
Balga PS is very fortunate to have Brooke Wardana as part of our leadership team. She is our on-site literacy expert who leads our Early Childhood Education, builds teacher capacity through instructional coaching and provides on-going professional learning for staff. This term, Brooke has been presenting us with the latest research and strategies relating to Phonological Awareness (letter-sound relationship), reading difficulties, intervention strategies, and the importance of explicitly teaching phonics. Her presentations have highlighted the fact that learning to read is a complex task, so Balga PS is ensuring that our teachers are highly skilled and armed with the lasted research and strategies to support your child.
Teacher Meetings
It is important to maintain effective communication between parents/carers and teachers. If you need to speak to your child’s teacher, please make an appointment so the teacher can give you the necessary time and confidentiality you require.
Kind regards,
Mike Wills

Community Tree Planting Program
We continue our strong relationship with the City of Stirling and we were lucky enough to receive 45 tree saplings. The students in Room 10 will be planting these saplings on the verges around the school to enhance the environment and leave their mark before graduating. The students will learn practical tree planting skills and the positive impact planting trees in their community has. Keep an eye out for pictures of the event.
Reports Reminder
Students will still receive a report this semester, however they will be different. We have been directed by the Department that grades (A, B, C, D, E) will not be included in the Term Two report. Further information about how the reports will be structured will be communicated to you once a decision has been made.
Regards,
Anthony Chiappalone
