From the Principal

Dear Families

As we enter the last term of the year, we look forward to a number of significant events throughout Term 4.

Interschool Sports Carnival – Friday 23rd October

This year Balga PS will be hosting North Balga, Warriapendi, and Waddington in the interschool competition. Miss Palmer has been working hard organising this event with the support from a number of other staff members. Thank you Miss Fox for supporting our representing students by offering additional training. If your child has been selected to represented the school, you are very welcome to join us this Friday.

New Engagement Space/Playground

Though this area has been referred to as a play area, my vision is to utilise it as an Engagement Space. As well as an area for students to play in during break time, it will also be accessed by classes during instructional time as an alternative learning space.

My other plan for the is to give it an identity by naming the area using Noongar language. This will be a wonderful opportunity to increase our cultural responsiveness throughout the school by embedding Noongar language in our environment. The area should be completed this week.

WAM (Western Australian Music) Concert – 30th October 2020

We are fortunate to have WAM visiting our school in week three. They will deliver a 30min music presentation to the whole school at no cost. WAM is comprised of individuals that have been involved in diverse sectors of the industry, WAM’s staff are passionate about the WA music community and the people and organisations within it.

Music Network Choir Showcase – Thursday 5th November

Our wonderful choir members who have been working under the expert guidance of Miss Dempsey-Lees will be performing on 5 November. We wish them all the best.

Kind regards

Mike Wills

Deputy’s Desk

Welcome back to all families! We are looking forward to an exciting Term 4 and the many up and coming events including Interschool, Swimming, NAIDOC and graduation. This week is book week and the theme is ‘Curious Creature, Wild Minds.’ On Tuesday, we had many children join in and dressing up as their favourite book characters and it was wonderful to see them all in the parade. We had a best dressed prize for a junior and senior student. Kimberley in Pre-Primary thrilled us with her outfit, and Daania in Year 6 wowed us with her handmade costume. Students also took part in ‘Books on Blankets’ after lunch. Rooms 1, 2, 3, 4 and 8 spent some time together reading out in the sunshine. We were also lucky enough to have Janine Freeman, dressed as a unicorn, visit our school and read with 3 of our classes.

This Friday, Balga will be hosting the Interschool carnival alongside local schools. Our year 3s to 6s have been training hard to take part and we are looking forward to a fabulous day. Parents are welcome to attend throughout the day, and are asked to adhere to social distancing rules.

As we are going into Summer and our days are quickly heating up, Balga has a ‘No Hat, No Play’ policy. Students are required to wear a wide brim hat if they are wanting to play during lunch and recess. If families need assistance sourcing an appropriate hat, please come and see us in the office.

Last week, Room 8 had a Foodbank incursion, where the students took part in a cooking lesson. Thank you Miss Fox, Mr Merrells and our parent volunteers for making it possible. The students had a fabulous time and made some pretty yummy meals.

Year 6 Girls Friendship Club

This term Emma Lawrence, our Learning Support Coordinator and Di Norris, our School Chaplain will be running a weekly program for our year 6 girls on Tuesdays based around positive friendships. This program is voluntary and will allow the girls to discuss their thoughts and feelings in a safe and constructive environment. It will take place during recess or lunch for the rest of this term. We are excited to provide this opportunity to the girls in the final year of primary school.

Food Sensations Incursion

Room 8 participated in Foodbank’s Food Sensations program on the first day back of Term 4. They learnt about nutritional foods and cooked six delicious, healthy meals which each student was able to try. It was a very successful afternoon and all the children thoroughly enjoyed learning new cooking skills and creating a meal to share with others.

REMINDERS

No Hat, No Play

Please ensure that your child has a wide brimmed hat for outdoor play at recess, lunch and sport. If your child does not have a wide brimmed hat, they will not be able to play out in the sun during recess and lunchtimes
